Did we hear correctly? R’ Yisroel Duvid Klein? Baruch Dayan Ha’Emes?

Unfortunately we have heard correctly! A gem has been taken from Klal Yisroel, we lost a ray of light, a pillar of chesed, a teacher and builder of Torah and an askan like none other.

There is not enough ink to write about a person whose kindness knew no bounds. Rivers of tears are being shed by thousands of people who were the beneficiaries of his endless stream of giving. The wound is raw and the pain is deep.

We have lost a Yid for whom the word “no” didn’t exist in his lexicon. Every type of problem and situation found its way to his door, and every time he helped out to the best of his ability.

Where should we begin? His warmth, genuine smile, refined nature, loyalty to every cause, just where??

R’ Yisroel Duvid supported his family very modestly as a melamed for 25 years. With his amazing warmth he infused the young hearts of his talmidim with a love of Torah and yiddishkeit.

However, every moment that he wasn’t in the classroom, he was occupied with his myriad chesed activities. His kindness and askanus had not boundaries, not differentiating between the poor, wealthy, chassidish, non-chassidish, the healthy, the sick, hachnasas kallah, keren yesomim, matanos l’evyonim, kimcha d’pischa, tomchei Shabbos, bikur cholim, R’ Meir Baal Haness, Kupas Ezra, Mosdos Hatorah, lomdei torah and so much more.

A giant among us has fallen, a giant of torah and chesed – he spent his day teaching torah to children then took a chesed call to take someone to the hospital, from there to arrange a dinner for a mosad, and then to make deliveries for tomchei Shabbos. And before returning home he would knock on several doors to raise funds for another important cause. This was his typical day. He was always available to listen to everyone regardless of the cause or the time of day.

His connection and total submission to the Boyaner Rebbe Shlita was amazing. His mesiras nefesh for Boyaner mosdos worldwide and particularly for the Ruzhin Yeshiva, was immeasurable.

Above all, he never took credit for any of his endless charitable activities and was always quick to point out others who deserve the full credit.

Dear Brothers, the time has come for us to repay all the kindness. His family is mourning their personal loss and the wounds will take a long time to heal. But we can’t let them live in daily anguish of not knowing where their sustenance to replace his income will come from. He spent his life providing for others and his own family can not be ignored.

No! We cannot allow that to happen! He did not hesitate before helping anyone in need and we will not hesitate to help his family!

Kindly open up your hearts, lend them a hand, be their shoulder to lean on, and contribute generously to this campaign. Let’s show this broken-hearted family that Klal Yisroel didn’t forget their father’s tremendous Chesed.

A real loss!

by Rabbi Dani Staum

I can’t say I knew Rabbi Yisrael Dovid Klein well. I knew he was a rebbe in the Viener yeshiva and that he was sought after for his advice, but I didn’t know much more than that. Still, I knew him well enough to know that he was a very special person. You didn’t have to know him well to realize that.

A few years ago I received a call from Rabbi Klein before Purim. At the time, I didn’t know who he was. He explained to me that he runs an organization called Gomlei Chesed, which raises money for Jewish families in need throughout the Rockland County community to be distributed on Purim day. Being that I was a community rabbi, he wanted to know if I was interested in participating in the Matanos Laevyonim campaign. I was impressed with the organization and was happy to be part of it. I was also inspired by Rabbi Klein’s sensitivity and the warmth he exuded.

Since then, I anticipated his phone call every year before Purim. I looked forward to hearing his friendly voice, his warm greeting, and the heartfelt berachos he always gave me.

A few weeks ago, when I received the coveted call, I told Rabbi Klein that now I knew Purim was really in the air. We had our usual pleasant conversation, including my thanking him for allowing me to be part of such a beautiful mitzvah opportunity, and him turning the gratitude back at me.

Little did I know that that would be the last time I would have the opportunity to hear his warmth and receive his heartfelt berachos. As I have done the last few years, on Purim afternoon, I called in the amount of donations I had received, and placed the envelope with the cash and checks on my shelf, as I hurried out to the Purim seudah. (Money is laid out for the organization so that the funds could be disseminated on Purim day. The collected money is gathered after Purim from all the collectors to pay back those who generously laid out the money.)

As soon as Purim ended, the world was consumed by the Coronavirus pandemic. Every time I saw the envelope on my shelf I reassured myself that there were other years when it took a few weeks before I got the envelope back to Rabbi Klein. But deep down I was worried about Rabbi Klein.

On Pesach, my fear was confirmed when a friend mentioned that Rabbi Klein was in the ICU struggling for his life. Along with so many others, I davened for him. I hoped that the zechus of all his Torah and chesed would stand for him so that we could all continue to benefit from his quiet greatness. But, it was not to be! All his Torah and chesed will indeed stand for him and his family, albeit not in the way we had hoped.

After hearing about his petirah, I called a few people who knew Rabbi Klein to hear their recollections and reflections. The common theme that everyone spoke about was his “lichtikeit”. “You could hear him smiling even when you spoke to him on the phone.”

His Emunah was incredible. He constantly spoke about Hashem. His emotions never overwhelmed his sense of calmness and bitachon, no matter what was happening.

He made everyone feel special. A friend who collected for his Purim campaign for a few years, related that one year, his community raised a relatively small amount. He was uncomfortable calling Rabbi Klein to report that they had raised much less than in previous years. When he did call, however, Rabbi Klein wouldn’t stop thanking him and telling him how appreciative he was and how helpful the money he collected was.

He seemed to always know what to say to everyone. That’s why so many people turned to him for advice and chizuk.

Moshe Ribiat, a close neighbor, related that Rabbi Klein was ALWAYS cheerful and upbeat. “I learned from him to never complain. Everything was “Baruch Hashem!” He exemplified patience and always seeking shalom. His bain adam lachaveiro was on the highest level. Our family learned so much from him! He inspired us by how he lived his life.”

This past winter, Rabbi Klein was home sick for some time. One of the first times that he went out afterward he fell down a flight of stairs. When discussing what happened, he smiled his usual radiant smile and sincerely remarked “whatever Hashem wants!”

The more I have learned about Rabbi Klein, the more pained I feel that I didn’t have the opportunity to know him more. He was a man of regal bearing and of internal greatness.

It is yet another painful loss for our community and for Klal Yisrael.

If he was able to touch me so deeply when I only interacted with him occasionally, I can only imagine how much more of an impact and positive effect he had on those who were privileged to know him better and benefit from his ceaseless Chizuk, love and warmth.

May he be a maylitz yosher for all of us.
